Options For Adding Water Features To Your Backyard

Your home's backyard should be a place for you to relax and escape from the outside world. Adding water features to your yard can help to provide a tranquil atmosphere, beautify your surroundings and even increase your property value. If you decide that you want to add aquatic features to your property, you can choose from a variety of structures including fountains, bird baths and ponds.

Fountains

A great way to add a focal point and structure to your lawn is to build a fountain in a prominent area of the yard. The sound of water splashing softly in a fountain can bring an air of serenity to your lawn. You can choose from several types of fountains from tabletop models for outdoor dining tables to large structures with multiple tiers and moving parts.

Popular styles and fountain designs include:

  • Urn
  • Pedestal
  • Statuary
  • Wall

The fountains may have spouts that spray water into the air in specific formations. You can also add spouts to existing fountains. Other features of fountains include lighting, solar panels to run pumps, decorative sculptures and basins. If you want to decorate your concrete or brick fence, you can add a wall fountain with cascading features.

Birdbaths

In order to attract birds to your yard, you can install a fountain specifically designed for the winged creatures. Birdbaths attract more types of birds than feeders so you will have a diverse assortment of the small animals in your yard taking advantage of the source of fresh water to drink, bath and wade.

You can buy a pre-designed birdbath from home improvement stores or hire a contractor to design and install a custom structure.

No matter what type of birdbath you place in your yard, the basin on the structure should not be more than three inches deep. It should also have a rough bottom so birds do not lose their footing.

In addition, birds will be more apt to gather on fountains that include running water or spouts because they will be attracted to the sound of the water.

Ideal places for birdbaths include spaces where cats cannot lie in wait to attack birds. You should also keep the birdbath away from feeders so seeds and bird waste do not soil the fresh water.

Ponds

Adding a backyard pond provides a touch of luxury to your property especially if you fill the water with fish, decorative rocks and aquatic plants. While a pond may be a more expensive backyard addition than other water structures, it will provide many intangible benefits.

A pond can serve as a center of activity when you have family gatherings and entertain guests. Ponds designed and installed by experts are not only works of art, they can provide a home for exotic fish and attract frogs and wading birds. The animals that come to the pond will fill your yard with the sounds of nature and add to the tranquil setting.

Hiring a Contractor

While it is easy to install small fountains and birdbaths, if you want a larger structure, you should hire a contractor from a landscaping company like Kona Land and Water Escapes to install the water feature. An experienced contractor can provide you with an estimate of how much it will cost to build the water feature of your dreams. The cost will vary based on size, building materials, lighting and your design preferences.

Typical materials used to construct water features include fiberglass, cast aluminum, cast iron, limestone, granite, resin composites and ceramic products.

Depending on the scope of the project, it can take anywhere from a few hours to several days to install a water feature. In addition, contractors can also help if your fountain or pond has a leak, requires cleaning or needs a replacement part.
